Research and Scholarship Committee

Research and Scholarship Committee (formerly Research Council)

The University of Houston Research and Scholarship Committee exists as one branch of the faculty governance structure through the Faculty Senate. It assists the President, Provost, and Vice Presidents in formulating recommendations and policies affecting the research community on the UH campus. The Research and Scholarship Committee provides a forum for internal discussion, initiates policies touching on research matters, gathers and disseminates information to the faculty, and provides a faculty voice to University Administration on matters pertaining to research.

The Research and Scholarship Committee also administers the funding for UH internal awards.

Preference is given to proposals that have partial financial support from their department or college. In addition, limited financial assistance may be requested for the publication of books. Maximum grant is $3,000.

Grants to Enhance and Advance Research (GEAR)
The purpose of the GEAR program is to leverage research at the University, with special emphasis on projects that will attract support from federal sources such as NSF, NIH, DOE, NIMH, and DOD that allow full indirect cost return. GEAR recipients are required to submit a proposal to an external funding source as their final report.

Eligibility: All full-time faculty members who are tenured or tenure-track or research faculty are eligible to apply for GEAR funds except previous GEAR winners who failed to complete the reporting requirements. Individual faculty members or groups of faculty members may apply. Each college will be allowed to submit at least one GEAR proposal for consideration by the RSC. Additional slots will be awarded in proportion to the total IDC generation by the respective colleges.

Review Process: The proposals will be reviewed and ranked by an elected or appointed committee of faculty within the academic college in which the PI holds primary appointment. Each college should establish a fair and transparent mechanism for review that might or might not involve external evaluations. The details of the review process within the college will be disclosed to the RSC. The RSC will select winning proposals from those forwarded by the colleges.
