Interest in UH Core Facilities Management Attracts Chinese Delegation

Representatives from over a dozen Chinese universities were welcomed by the Division of Research in mid-August 2011. Their visit was part of a multi-university stop aimed at learning how American universities manage core facilities.

Fourteen executive directors of research and resource centers and institutes from top Chinese universities heard from Vice Chancellor/Vice President for Research and Technology Transfer Dr. Rathindra Bose, Executive Director for College/Division Business Operations at the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics Fred McGhee, Dean of the Cullen College of Engineering Dr. Joe Tedesco, and Dean of the College of Optometry Dr. Earl Smith. Associate Vice Chancellor/Vice President for Research and Technology Transfer Dr. Elizabeth Anderson Fletcher accompanied the group.

Presentations were given by Dr. Dmitri Litvinov, director of the Nanofabrication Facility (Cleanroom); Dr. Laura Frishman, associate dean for the College of Optometry; Dr. Jan-Åke Gustafsson, director of the Center for Nuclear Receptors and Cell Signaling; Allan Jacobson, director of Texas Center for Superconductivity at UH (TcSUH); Dr. Venkat Selvamanickam, director of TcSUH’s Applied Research Hub; Dr. Ramesh Shrestha, director of the National Center for Airborne Laser Mapping (NCALM); and Dr. Mike Harold, M.D. Anderson professor of chemical engineering and co-principal investigator of the Texas Diesel Testing and Research Center. Dr. Wei-Kan Chu, research director of TcSUH, also met with the group.

The delegation also toured the Nanofabrication Facility, College of Optometry’s Vision Science Core, TcSUH, Diesel Testing Center, and the Center for Nuclear Receptors and Cell Signaling.

The delegation was guided by Memphis Yin, alumnus of Tsinghua University and vice president of SEIPO, a Tomball-based company. The visit was organized locally by Yin and Dr. Peter Li, UH-Downtown professor of political science.

The UH stop was part of a three-week visit to the United States that included visits to Harvard University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Columbia University, Rice University and the University of Texas at Austin.
