Human Subjects Training: The Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI)

National Institutes of Health grant applications require evidence of human subject research education, when applicable. The Committees for the Protection of Human Subjects recommends the Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI), but also accepts NIH Human Subjects Research certificates.

As part of its training offerings to investigators, and administrative and support staff, the Division of Research subscribes to the CITI program, which consists of a variety of modules specifically prepared for investigators conducting research involving human subjects. Each module has been developed by experts in the Institutional Review Board (IRB) community and focuses on a variety of bioethics and human subject research topics.

When a user completes the CITI program, a Completion Report can be downloaded as proof of completion. Completion reports are also retained by the CPHS. An aggregate score of 80 percent will be required to receive a completion report.

NIH Requirement
All investigators submitting a grant application to the National Institutes of Health (NIH) are required to show evidence of human subject research education if the project includes the use of humans.  All other investigators submitting a CPHS application are advised to complete the training program.

Renew every Two Years
Investigators conducting human subject research must renew their training every two years. A “refresher” course is available to investigators who have completed CITI’s original course.

The University of Houston is committed to the ethical treatment and protection of human subjects in research, and complies with all federal guidelines.
