Animal Care Operations

The University of Houston Animal Care Operations (ACO) is a core facility within the University responsible for the health and well-being of laboratory animals used for the institution's biomedical research programs. ACO works in tandem with the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee to meet all standards mandated by the Animal Welfare Act, Center for Disease Control, National Research Council Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals, Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care International, and the Public Health Service Policy on Humane Care and Use of Laboratory Animals.

The UH Animal Care and Use Program has been fully accredited by AAALAC since February 1986. The UH animal care and use program consists of three animal facilities, which is comprised of approximately 30,000 gross square feet. ACO facilities accommodate a variety of species and multiple procedural spaces.

ACO provides professional veterinary, surgical, and animal care services. Training is available on the care and use of animals for UH faculty, staff, and trainees.
