Vice President for Research and Technology Transfer, UH

Rathindra N. Bose is Vice Chancellor for Research and Technology Transfer for the UH System and Vice President for Research and Technology Transfer for UH, a role he assumed in August 2011. Bose has oversight responsibilities for the Division of Research, and various centers and institutes that report to the Division of Research. He holds faculty appointments in the departments of Chemistry, Biology and Biochemistry, and Pharmacological and Pharmaceutical Sciences.

His research interests and activities cover a wide range of multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary areas, including metals in medicine, gene markers for different cancers and new catalysts for fuel cells. Among Bose’s achievements include the creation of a new class of anticancer agents Phosphaplatins that exhibits superior efficacy with reduced toxicity in preclinical experiments compared to existing platinum anticancer drugs. Bose has five issued patents and five applications on cancer drugs and fuel cell electrocatalysts pending at the United States Patent and Trademark office. A New York-based biotechnology company, Phosplatin Therapeutics, has licensed his anticancer agents. His research has been supported through several grants from federal and state agencies, including the National Science Foundation, the National Institutes of Health, and the U.S. Department of Education.

He has published extensively in his own field as well as interdisciplinary/multidisciplinary areas that extend to chemical and structural biology and materials science. Bose has published more than 90 refereed articles and 73 abstracts and proceedings, and has presented numerous lectures in national and international conferences and academic institutions. He has successfully supervised dissertations and theses of 14 Ph.D. and several M.S. students.

Bose has served as a reviewer for funding agencies, a reviewer for more than fifteen international journals, an ad hoc member of the Metallobiochemistry Study Section at NIH, a panel member for the NSF, and a member of the editorial boards of three journals. He is currently serving as the chair of the Science Advisory Board of Phosplatin Therapeutics.

Bose received his Ph.D. degree in chemistry from Georgetown University, Washington, D.C., in 1982. He received a master's degree in chemistry from the Rajshahi University in Bangladesh in 1975 and a bachelor's degree in chemistry with honors from the institution in 1973.

Before joining the University of Houston, he served in a similar capacity at Ohio, Northern Illinois and Kent State Universities.
